Our former students: Axl

Axl completed her IDC with us in October 2024. You might see her around Purple Dive at the moment...because she is now one of our instructors!

Where are you from and how did you start diving?

I’m Axl and I’m from France ! I started diving in July 2023 where I did my open water with an NGO in Croatia. There we learned how to dive while helping the ocean at the same time, with a dive against debris program. Which is a path I always wanted to follow : be in the ocean and help our planet. So I found my perfect match in life : diving.

What made you decide to embark on the IDC or Divemaster course?

I always wanted to teach, or at least share knowledge and passions. After seeing for the first time the sparks of pure joy in the eyes of a new diver coming back from a dive, they were so terrified about, made me realise : that’s what I want to do, share the beauty of the ocean and the joy and peace it brings.

What was your favourite part/highlight of the training?

I think the team we had for the IDC was something I couldn’t have dreamed of ! Such moments of laugh and amazing team spirit, whether it was my lovely IDC buddies or our incredible instructors Yvonne, Pris and Helene, they were always here to help or support you during the whole process. Even in doubt of what you could do, or if you would succeed, having this team around you pushed you through !

What was your biggest challenge and how did the team help you overcome this?

Theory exam..especially physics… I do love learning but trust me, the theory exam and I, were the worst match ever. But I was so lucky to have my friends spending some time with me on it, teaching me different way of understanding all of those calculation that were driving me crazy. And again, our amazing instructors spending so much time, helping, explaining and being patient with me (thanks again).

Where are you working now and what is your current role?

I am currently really lucky to work at Purple Dive Penida as an Instructor for the high season. Which I’m really grateful being able to continue my little adventure there !

What is your favourite part about your job?

My favorite part of the job is being able to take people for the first time in the ocean, and see the look of apprehension turning into a new hook in life. Them being so grateful of the new world they discovered and wanting to learn more about it.

What is your best dive to this day?

Probably one of my dive in Bira, at Eagle Rock. Where you hook on in the middle of current and you are surrounded by marble ray, barracuda, white tip reef shark, and my favorite, grey reef shark crusing above or next to you.
