1% For The Planet: where Purple Dive Penida's environmental giving actually goes

Purple Dive Penida is a member of 1% For The Planet, meaning at least 1% of revenue is committed to environmental causes every year. Membership alone doesn't say much on its own — what matters is where that money actually goes, so here's the specific breakdown.

What 1% For The Planet actually requires

1% For The Planet is a global network of businesses that commit at least 1% of annual revenue to approved environmental partners, with membership verified annually against that commitment. It's a financial pledge, not a one-time donation or a logo you can put on a website without ongoing proof.

Where Purple Dive Penida's giving goes

Each year we choose organisations that we collaborate with and either do monetary donations or in-kind donations. Over the years, we have established a number of partnerships with local organisations in the area that we feel are contributing to our community here! On this page you can see every single NGO we have already supported.

Some of our local partners include:

  • Terra Segara, a local NGO here in Nusa Penida helping train youths of the island to scuba diving.

  • Sungai Watch, a Bali based NGO that has made its mission to clean the Bali rivers

  • IndoOcean Project, that shares our goal of supporting local Indonesian women in ocean-related activities. Together we have developed the Purple Grant.

  • Daughthers of the Deep, who we work with to help train local Indonesian women to become dive professionals.

Local impact on Nusa Penida

With Terra Segara, we give away boat spaces or pool and equipment rental so the young generation of Nusa Penida can get to dive, experience the ocean around their island and maybe discover a potential career. With IndoOcean Project, we are on year 2 of the Purple Grant and some of the first papers linked to this grant are about to publish!

With our friends at Daughters of the Deep, we are finishing training up the third Indonesian woman as a dive pro here in Purple Dive!

These are all local actions that impact our dive community and our island environment.

Why this matters when choosing a dive centre

A lot of dive operators state a sustainability commitment. Fewer can point to a named, externally-verified giving structure with a specific destination for the money. That's the difference 1% For The Planet membership is meant to signal — and it's worth asking any dive centre you're considering to be just as specific.
